Palma

The area of Palma is dominated by the capital itself although it encompasses various other areas including the exclusive Son Vida suburb and the coastal resorts of Can Pastilla, el Arenal and San Agustin. Palma is the economic and cultural hub of the island housing almost half the entire population of the Balearic Islands; some 325,000 people. Located on the south coast of Mallorca it offers beautiful views across the bay of Palma and justifiably forms an important holiday resort offering some of the islandīs best choice of hotels, restaurants and entertainment.
Palma is also the centre for all incoming and outgoing traffic. The airport of Son Sant Joan is one of the busiest in Spain handling millions of visitors each year while the port also brings in its fair share of visitors from the mainland alongside all types commercial goods. Traffic around the city can be chaotic at the best of times as all roads lead to this focal point.
However, despite having become a modern, vibrant, sometimes congested city, Palma has managed to retain its old town and its ancient culture and charm. Some of the islands best attractions are to be found here, including the Royal Palace and the Castle of Bellver that has dominated the skyline since the 14th century. Its pride and joy however, is the Cathedral, one of the worldīs finest and largest Gothic structures standing proudly at the end of the Paseo Maritimo The old town of Palma fans out from here in a maze of narrow streets, flanked by ancient mansions and hidden interior patios.
